Unknown Gas smell in Garage

Okay, I come home from work the othe night, and my house smells of gasoline, open garage door, and bam! Overpowering fumes!

Here is the weird part, My car 88 IROC, has been in the gargae for over a year. Not running. The tank may have a 1/4 tank of gas in it. The fuel lines are not connected to the engine. Battery has been disconnected for the entire time.

I have been working on the body, sanding etc. No gas has ever been used. There is a 2 1/2 gallon tank of gas for our lawn mower, with the cap on. No other gas is in there, no gas powered epuipment.

I see no gas puddles under the car.

I have keep the garage door cracked open with a fan blowing out, and the door open all the way when I am home.

It has been 3 days , and the smell is still in the garage a little bit.

When I first came home to it, I lossened the gas cap on the car and it vented a lot of pressure, screwed it back on, and have opened it every day since and it has not had any built up pressure.

Whats up? Is someone trying to burn down my house when I am not home or what?

As said the car has been sitting in my garage for a 1yr, and have never had this happen before.

Last year I removed my intake and fuel rail. I just had the open lines sitting there. Well we got a warmer day, and my garage stunk of gas. Some how it built up pressure and gas was slowly dripping from the lines.

I then realized someone put my gas cap back on, I loosened it and it never happened again while the lines were open. Try just leaving it with the gas cap loosened or off instead of loosening it and tightening it back up.

Check right under where the lines are open and see if it is wet.

Has happend to me with the lines off. If the gas cap is on tight the fuel in the tank will come out of the lines when the tank warms up.

line IROC5.7L said loosen gas cap.

line IROC5.7L said unloosen gas cap. [/B]

Unloosen? Wouldn't that be tightening it?

J/J, but I hate it when people say that.

I will loosen it, that makes sense, it has warmed up here the past couple days.

Thanks !

yep, the pressure in teh tank builds as teh gasoline warms and the fumes build it pushes the gas out the open lines.
