Air conditioning: How can you tell if all the R-12 has leaked out?

How could you tell if it all leaked out without running it? I tried opening the capped valve on the silver can, but no pressure came out. Is that even on the right track? Does the car have to be running for it to have any pressure?
The reason I am asking is because I am pulling the engine to transplant after the car was damaged significantly in the right front due to collision. Battery box area was hit hard and the radiator & AC condenser were pushed more toward the driver side. The entire AC system doesn't appear to have taken much damage however. The condenser is a little bent overall, as well as a few of the lines, but seems intact. Can you remove the whole system in one piece without opening it up? I guess it would be easier to just start ripping those AC components out, but with all the warning labels i've been wondering if it's safe to do? Is it dangerous to breathe that stuff?
If you can't remove the system intact how do you go about disassembling it (assuming there is still pressure in it)? Many thanks to anyone who can offer help or has even taken time to read this!

The only advice that I can give you is about how to check if it has leaked out. I heard from a fried that you should be able to check with a black light. Of course this needs to be done when it is dark.

Transmission: sure does
If you press the shreader valve in line and nothing comes out, its empty.

The blacklight thing only works when there is a dye in the system.
