Rings

If I have bad rings, would the car smoke all the time? And how bad would the smoke be? I really need to know before this week. Thanks guys

Yea it would, but a badly worn valve stem can do that too. The amount of smoke varies, and is generally worse as the rpm's climb.

it also depends on how thick the oil you use is. Run a compression test.

I use 10-w40 motor oil.... Is that too thick? Or is it good. I need a little more help here. Please

for NJ. No you can't get much thicker and be safe. I am afraid you can't tell more without a compression test or leak down test. They will tell you if you need rings or just a valve job. If it smokes all the time at idle, its probably rings. If it is really bad after it has been ideling for a while and you press the accelerator, its probably valve guides and seals.
