Did you set the timing with EST disconnected, then reconnect and plug in the scanner?

If so, you're normal The 42 will stay for 50? starts, or until you reset the ECM

Also, the 15-16* at idle with the EST bypass connected, is normal as well.

Well this is what I did....Turn off car and disconnect the EST then set the base timing at 6* BTDC turn the car off then plug in the EST and start the car.....Put the timing light on and its way past 15* BTDC at idle.......the car is also very low on power.

Thanks for all the help
Brian

My car was set to 6* BTDC with the EST disconnected... And with it connected, it's somewhere between 20-30* BTDC, so, that's fine..

Starting the car with the wire will set an error code, so that's fine too.. Disconnect the battery for a little while to clear out the ECM, and if the code comes back, THEN you have something to worry about.

As for the lack of power, I'm not sure. With 6* BTDC, you should be running premium gas. Lower gas MIGHT be producing detonation, which would explain the loss of power.

I am assuming you have a TBI, because the TPI's had 6* BTDC as the stock timing.

Well that is the problem we unhooked the battery for about 5 minutes and the started the car and still got the SES light and then I used my scanner and found the code.

Hey Brian, the troubleshooting chart for code 42 is to verfiy the wiring on the EST circuit, faulty ignition module, faulty ECM or the memcal is not correctly seated in the socket.
