testing o2 sensor

Is there a way to test the o2 sensor with it off the car to see if it is actually in working condition?

There probably is, but it would be a huge waste of time and money. If you have a VOM, hook it up to the wires while it's in the car and running. Should be jumping around a lot, not just staying fixed on the same value.

And destroy the sensor at the same time. It says right on the box (or in the directions, I forget which) NOT to hook any kind of multi-meter to an oxygen sensor because the drain, no matter how small, will mess up the sensors readings.

No doubt people have done it before though, I'm just reciting the warning to you that came with my Bosch unit.
