timing question...

timing question...
i just noticed something for the first time tonight. standing in front of the engine looking at the tab, it reads like this
12 8 6 4 2 0 2 4 6 8
but the first time i noticed above the numbers it says BEFORE and AFTER such as this:
BEFORE------AFTER
12 8 6 4 2 0 2 4 6 8
does this mean this whole time ive been retarded the timing instead of advancing it? cuz i know my car is 6degrees advanced stock, so ive always had it here:
