Make a solution of water and laundry dteregent and spray the dirty side and let it soak in. Backflush (rinse from the clean side). Let it dry. Spray w/ KN filter oil.
You can use the KN filter cleaner too, but it is overpriced, laundry soap and water works just as well. Wanna know where i found that out. It told me so somewhere in some KN literature i had.

I just cleaned my K&N... man, that thing was crapped up. I picked up a cleaning "kit" from Summit for $8.50 with the cleaner & oil in it... I don't know what those go for locally. I actually stained my basement sink from all the dirt that was in the filter! It took me 20 minutes to clean- 10 of which is waiting for the cleaner to "work". Then it took about an hour and a half for the air filter to dry "naturally" (no heat or compressed air), and 5 minutes to re-oil it.
