How can I tell if this is a 350 or a 400?

Thank you. The number on the back of the block is GM 3970010 ALso there is a little plug on the block just above the timing chain cover what is this for?

An 010 casting block is a 4" bore and could be a 4 bolt main. It's a 350 block or an late 327 block.

yes it is a 4-bolt main. I just wanted to make sure that is what it is. I have just the block sitting in my garage.
Anyone have any idea what the little plug I described earlier is for? Does this mean it might be from a different year.

The little plug goes into one of the oil pasages, it fills up a hole made during the mfg process. Most if not all SBC blocks have them.

010 is a very common 350 block through the 70s, they came in trucks, Z28s, etc.
