gears are the same..

if you are going vacuum advance i believe you just leave the computer stuff disconnected and run the engine like a 70s engine.. you already have a mechanical fuel pump, just get the standard HEI distributor with vacuum advance..

Most probably the gear from the computer contolled distributor will not fit on the vac adv dist. The shaft sizes are different.

I believe what you are talking about is the material the gear is made out of. I do remember hearing that the stock dist. gear will get chewed up by the dist. drive gear on the cam. BUT I do NOT remember if what I heard was referring to a stock cam or an aftermarket cam.
Maybe some else here can shed more light on this for you

are you sure?

why is it that when you buy a new roller camshaft for a car that wasn't factory equipped with roller cams that you don't need to change the distributor gear..

i believe it's standard chevy, dude. i just pulled the distributor in my '86 and it's exactly the same as my '87 minus the top of the distributor differences... gear-wise they are identical

I was told that the gear sizes are different and that a roller cam uses a different size gear.A friend of mine did this in the same camaro(87iroc lg4) and the gear from the vac advance distributor started to grind and wear down the gear so then had to put the old conputer control distributor back in his car.I just dont want screw up the car so i want to be sure............

AFAIK
the mesh of the gears is the same.
Later dist. have a smaller shaft (.490)
HEI vac adv has a bigger shaft (.500)

The factory cam has a cast iron drive gear.

SOME aftermarket cams use a billet drive gear. If the cam has a billet drive gear, you have to use a bronze driven gear or the cast iron gear will be chewed up.
Check this page at Jegs.

It was the only thing I could find real quick.

you need a melonized ( bronze) dist gear For use with a Roller ( non hardned) Camshaft.

Or you will Chew it up In a few miles.
