89 rs anti-theft hell!!

Hi guys! i have a 89 rs i got for parts...no keys... i chenged the ign, but the old igh iad cintacts in it,the new one doesent. I believe this car is supposed to have a pellet in the ign key. SO my plan was just to solder a resistor across the 2 wire going to that.....so the antitheft sees that resistance and thinks everything is fine..... ok but bieng i have no original key i dont know what the resistance was for this car. My 90 iroc has a 7.5 kilo-ohm resistance across the chip on that ign key...i tried that on the rs,but still nothing...no starter engagement, theft light on. so i checked my cadillac...is has a 1.7 kilo ohm resistance. I tried that, still nothing.... does the 89 have yet a another resistance that my 90 iroc of my cadillac??? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!! !i just need to get this car runing to i can see of the motor +tranny are and good. I can manually jumper the starter, but car still wont start, because the computer is also killing the fuel. help me out mang!!!!

they used all different resistances in those keys, and the ecm has to read the right resistance. its an added antitheft. if all keys were the same resistance, it would be quickly figured out and thier would be almost no point for it, just an extra obstacle for the would be thieves.

There are 15 different resistors used. If your close they will work. I don't know what the 15 are tho.

THANKS ALOT!!!!! IVE GOT TIME ILL KEEP TRYING TILL I GET THE RIGHT ONE.... BTW IF SOMEBODY ELSE IS TRYING THE SAME THING: IF YOU DIDNT GET THE RESISTANCE RIGHT,TURN THE KEY BACK OFF.... YOU MUST WAIT 4 MINS THEN YOU CAN TRY A DIFF RESISTOR.

It is the VATS control module and it is located on the firewall behind the defroster vent on the drivers side by the right foot. BTW, the module you found on the passenger side was the cruise control module.

does the VATS controller need the resistance, or does the ecm.. i have another parts camaro laying around with the original keys and another ecm.. if i switched the 2 ecm around then switched over the cylinder locks, would the system work then, or does the "passkey" (VATS) need a certain resistance, or is it in the computer??

thanks

The resistance value in thte key is read by the VATS controller module which then sends a signal to the ECM if the resistance value is correct. Switching the ECM's and lock cylinders would not help you in this case. You would need a key with the correct resistance value to match the VATS module.

look on ebay and get a VATS bypass box if you want to bypass it...

it sends the correct signal to the ECM, making it think the VATS is there...

or keep trying key resistances.

Thye sell little boxes like mentioned above for remote starters. They have dip switch settings for resistance, you could use one of these boxes to hijack the vats system but you still need to find the correct resistance, that PDF will provide all the needed info.
