so my beater sometimes doesn't start... just nothing. I can remedy the problem by putting the car into gear and pushing it and then putting it back into park and trying the key again. It usually works. It happens more often when cold. What's going on?

 

If there's just nothing, you have a power problem to or at the starter. Moving the engine may be moving a bad connections somewhere.
