Can I eliminate smog equip?

I recently bought an 1950 1/2 ton pickup truck refitted with a '86 Camaro 305 ci motor (TPI). Because of its age I don't have to smog it, soooooo... can I remove the smog equipment(EGR, etc)without negatively affecting performance? Some of the components (idle air control motor, etc) have never been connected since I've owned the vehicle, and it seems to run well. I'm kinda new at this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

it depends on the carb and distributor, if they are computer controled in any way just yank them off and put and old dist and carb on, plug your egr and go.

I have a 89 305 TPI and I just finished pulling off all of my smog stuff. I dont have to do emissions at all. All that was done was the unplugging of the wire connector (sorry dont know the tech names of the stuff) on the black box and tucking that wire away out of the way so it doesnt hit the belt. Then I pulled the hoses that connected to it off and then proceeded to yank the box out. You will need a 10mm socket for almost all of the bolts and a Torx socket sorry dont remember the size. I then pulled the hose that went around the pack of the engine and capping off the AIR tubes and the tube that goes to the cat. Then I got advice from madmax and put 1/4" npt plugs in the holes that the AIR tubes went into the exhaust manifold to get rid of the tubes but you will still need to cap off the tube that runs to the cat. Then I took the smog pulley off of the system and got a shorter belt and rerouted it there is a tech article on it in the Technical Articles section of this page on how to reroute the belt. The only problem that I have is I have underdrive pulleys and now that I got rid of the smog pulley I have a slight charge problem but it stayes a little below 13 volts so it is not even that bad. Well I hope that is everything if there are any problems or anything that I made no sense on just ask.
