heater core not going back in

I know that replacing the heater core is no easy task so to speak. I just didn't think that it was going to be this much of a bitch. I was wondering if anybody had any good suggestions about an easy way to get the heater core to go back in. I cannot get the two hoses from the heater core to pass back through the firewall. Also, when I was replacing my steering column I broke a sensor that kind of looks like a plunger. It's attached to a vacuum line it looks like and I think it runs back through the firewall. Does anybody know what that part is that I broke and how much it costs to replace it?

I had a similar prob on mine, I had to return the core I got from Checker auto, and bought one from autozone, dropped right in. I messed with the tubes, bending a little back and forth( on the first one) and it wouldn't go period. The one from autozone, diff. manufacturer I guess, dropped right in.

The hoses should be installed after the core is in place.

I had a similar problem with replacement cores, until I finally took my original with me to match the angles of the standpipes. After a couple of stores and looking through several boxes, I found one that was reasonably close to the correct angle.

Good luck, I just replaced my heater core and it was an all day job. I also had some trouble getting the tubes to line up but it did finally fit. However, after putting everything back together the new core is not as good at heating the car as the original one was. I guess the flow is different or something. I even blew through the tubes before installing it to make sure it wasn't blocked. Too much of a hassle to put in another one so I will live with the car taking a while to warm up inside.

I had (have....) the same problem after heater core replacement. I have bled the system thoroughly, and still do not get good heat when cruising around town. (all of the cooling system works as it is supposed to..... new pump, rad, thermostat, etc...) However, after cruising on the freeway for a while, (hour or so) the heat gets hotter......

Any ideas?
