what are bearings and what do they do? (I'm an Idiot)

 

Bearings are round strips of a soft, porous metal that go inbetween moving parts inside your engine. Then behave as sort of an oil soaked sponge, so that the moving parts actually ride on a film of oil, not metal on metal.

Altho..I should say, those are engine bearings. There are several different types of bearings in your car (ie axle bearings, wheel bearing, etc) , with different designs.

Most use an oil or grease soaked surface with a bunch of rollers set into it. The idea being the same as engine bearings....to reduce friction on a rotating surface.
