code 43... knock sensor faulty?

The symptoms that have been occuring for the 3 weeks that I've owned the car so far is a diesel sound and some power loss. I though it was the timing, but adjusting it only helped a little bit.

Before I set the timing 2 weeks ago I put in some low octane fuel and lost all power and came up with a code 43. I put 92 octane back in and it solved the power and overheating problem. I've only been runing 92 since then.

This weekend I replaced the fuel filter and no improvement. Today I was booting around and my SES light came on and I lost all power. Its a code 43 again. Can anyone diagnose the problem from these symptoms?

Replace the knock sensor or the ESC module.

Is there a way to test either one?
