a little help please

There are a couple of red wires coming off of the +positive post of the battery and there is one big black one that comes off of it and i don’t know where it should go. I was almost positive that it went to the starter but it is a real stretch to get it there so i am not positive it went there anymore. Can someone tell me or look in there cars to find out were does it go. HELP!!
Thanks
Danny

!!!!! I think i am in trouble!!!!! I hooked it up to the starter and when i connected the battery there was a loud pinging noise like someone was hitting the starter with a hammer, i think it is trying to engage so i think i wired it up wrong, i hope i did not break any inline fuses!! On my starter there are 3 prongs. 2 big studs and a little one. One big stud with a short length i am pretty sure it goes to the starter engine and the other big stud has a longer length to it and i believe it goes to all the red wires with fusible links and the big black wire (the one that comes off of the battery) witch i know almost for sure that it goes to the starter now. The little prong there was only one cable and it is pretty obvious where it goes because of the diameter of the hole. I don’t know what to do now. I know one of the cables i said is in the wrong place but i don’t know witch one is

Purple wire with a small lug goes to the S terminal of the starter. The red wires with large lugs go to the longer stud with the main battery cable. Nothing else goes to the terminal where the little strap coming from the side of the starter motor itself goes. The black wire should have a small lug, and goes to the output terminal of the alternator. It certainly doesn't go to the starter.

http://firbirdgta.tripod.com/cars/id10.html there it is and it can not hook up to the alt because it has brackets that go back along the engine bay that hold it down and it is on the left side and my alternator is on the right so it cant possibly go to the alternator. And my car has three studs on the starter and the trans am only having 2.

That's the main positive battery cable. It goes to the big post on the starter that the red wires also go to.

Right-hand alternator cars have a much smaller (but still rather big) black wire that goes to the alternator.
