Ok, like the title says in the process of swaping heads, cam and intake, carb. Everything has gone pretty well so far. Here are some pics. Hope this is the right board:

Well, i have one question, the part that i have circled, what is that? Is there any way to get rid of it. I am trying to clean up my engine compartment, so if there is anything else in the pic that i can get rid of, let me know. Pic is in the next reply

If what I'm seeing is correct, that's a LOT of gunk in the valley. Wow. Yuck.
On the lighter side of things, pull the lifters and pushrods, pop off the balancer, unbolt the cover and thrust plate and bam you're in like flint.
ps, I don't see what you circled

Yes there is alot of sludge in the thing. The part that i circled is the hose that is comeing out of the firewall from the heater core, then it comes out in that little funny box looking thing and has 2 other hoses attached to it.

You circled the heater diverter valve.
BTW -- I notcied you removed your AC compressor. Hope the system wasn't charged when you did that!
Speaking of which, you might want to at least tape-off the hose-bracket-thingy where the hoses attach to the compressor so's you don't get any dirt or anything like that in there. If I recall correctly, AC systems are very intolerant debris in the system.

I pretty sure he deleted the AC
.
Sancho is right, that's the heater control valve. And yes, you can delete it if you want. Here's a how-to thread about it: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=242747

Yea i no longer use my A/C. It worked when i first bought the car but then i quit, im pretty sure it just needed recharged, and i wouldnt really use it any way so i just removed all the components, today i removed the condensor and all the hoses. So if i delete this heater vavle, my heat will still work right?

Man, that sure is a lot of sludge in there. What kind of oil have you been using? I haven't seen that kind of crude since the 80's.
Consider this http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aef.aspx after you get what you are removing as part of your mods cleaned up.
Oh, it's not a problem to remove the heater valve. IIRC, the valve only shuts when the AC is in the Max position. A lot of cars don't even have them.

Yea there is alot of sludge, it makes me sick. I normally run castrol part synthetic. The engine has around 200,000 miles on it too

Well, im finally done with the disassembly, took me about 12 hours. The hardest part was probly getting those darn lifters out, and the passenger side head didnt want to break loose for nothing. But so far everything has gone pretty well. Hopefully the re-assembly will go just as well. Heres the pic:

.A good "real" synthetic (Mobil 1, Redline, AMSOIL, and I believe Royal Purple) will not have all those VI improvers (if any), will have better detergent properties, and miles accumulated won't make that much difference.
Sorry for the bandwagon, but there really isn't any excuse for that these days.
FWIW, I have an HP Performance book on Cams and Valvetrains published in 1975, and there's a section where they do a step-by-step SBC cam change with a bunch of pictures using a mid-60's 2bbl El Camino 327 as their mule. The crude built up in that poor engine is down right criminal...

Why arent u rebuilding it with 200,xxx miles on the motor? If the top of the motor looks like that i can imagine what the bottom part looks like.

Im in the process of doing the same thing. Im doing heads, cam, intake and carb. Just started on it yesterday evening. Ive decided to just pull my motor so i can repaint the engine bay and clean stuff up. Plus my motor was yellow and i want it black. Heres my motor with 10,xxx miles on it. I use whatever oil is on sale just the regular oil no synthetic.

a friend of me worked at a local garage (gm-opel) and some of these guys have done it to theiir motors. (ok was only 4 cyl with 2 liters, but the princible is the same). btw, diesel has a small greasing attribute. so if you dont go down the quarter with your oildiesel, i dont think it will make big problems...anyone else heard of this method?

I believe sludge comes from running on old oil. The person before you or you did not do the proper oil changes on this engine. I have not seen that kind of sludge in a long time. When you go to cleant hat out you are going to get alot of crap in the lifters and crank. If you dont tear that down I would at least run a few guick oil chages throught it and maybe a quart of tranny fluid in the oil to help clean it up. you hae your work cut out for you but you have to GITTUR DONE

That looks like vintage Penzoil buildup. back in the day of 3rd gens, a car with Penzoil + infrequent oil channges = sludge. But now they got the better Z3 detergent additive or something like that.
Remove and clean the cover from the bottom of your intake manifold if it has one, or else you will run that old sludge through your new motor.

I changed the oil regularly, however when i bought the car, it was clear that it hadnt been taken care of, the interior was horrible, there children had wrote there names on the headliner and the back seats, i wish i had some before and after pics.
Hey Del, look at how far you came with the labor. It would be a SIN to install your new parts on that engine. Why dont you continue on, and pull the thing the rest of the way, and get her disassembled, cleaned, clearance checked, and re-ring, and install new bearings. There is NO WAY, NO WAY you can remove all of that sludge. You will remove what you can obviously see, but after you disturb it, pieces will end up everywhere else. You have come a long way now, so just continue on and do it right. I believe you have thrown away 12 labor hours, if you install any new parts on theat shortblock. As far as diesel, and I believe some company sells a product, I believe it is "Gunk" that is suppose to loosen sludge, and clean your engine. Think about this for a moment. Would you really want to loosen that stuff up, and maybe have some of it block a cam bearing, or main bearing oiling hole? You have done alot of backbreaking work, from what I can see from your pics. (at least it is for me, Im almost 40). Dont short yourself, and do it right. You will be glad you did.

Well, i have a little delay, the heads that i bought off ebay are cracked. So i am tying to track down a set of heads, im looking for either 081 416 or 601. Everything is completely tore down and now im just doing some cleaning and painting here and there.
You know, i have seriously been considering doing this, see , one day i am gonna build a 350 or 400 to drop in her which is the reason i havent done this, but still thinking about it.
