Now I'm confused, Do they still make r12? I thought they didn't so you'd have to pay an arm and a leg to charge it. Or is that just r22? If they do still make it, what would r12 cost per pound? Straighten me out please!

if your gonna charge your system (assuming it is empty) is would recommend taking a look at http://www.icorinternational.com/ a viable solution to r-12 and 134a retrofits. Vader pointed this one out before.

No it is not "made" anymore.

The only R-12 available is what's still out there in the market. Since Du-pont isn't allowed to make any more, the supply and demand for what's still out there is what regulates the price. $45/pound and up in bulk is not uncommon for R-12. Compare that to $2/pound for R-134a.

Although it's not produced any more, R-12 is still being recycled. It's being pulled out of older cars and refrigeration units, cleaned and sold back to customers who still want or need it.

SB,

LoCal prices seem a bit high. Around the midwest virgin R-12 can be had for 65.00/pound in 30# cylinders. As per the Montreal Protocols, no R-12 is supposed to be manufactured any longer, but there are still supplies available. There is virgin R-12 and recycled refrigerant as well. I'm always suspect of recycled refigerants since there is no certainty that there are no burnout contaminants included.

I gave up on R-12 quire some time ago and have been using R-414a as a drop-in replacement and to top off both R-12 and R-22 systems. It has a much better thermal coefficient and latent heat capacity, operates at considerably lower pressure than R-134a (so you don't trash your compressor) and is a heckuva lot cheaper and safer. You'll still need certification to acquire and use it, but it is a much better alternative than R-134a. It can even be used in R-134a systems to improve thermal performance. This is not uncommon in converted systems, since most R-134a systems fall on their faces like a drunk with his shoelaces tied together as soon as the ambient temperature hits about 90°F - right when you need it most. The only attraction to R-134a ia that it is available to everyone (for now)...

I'm not if this is the same thing that is above... but where I work (discount auto parts) and advance auto parts, we both sell Freeze 12 which works the exact same as R12

Vader has said it well. The only R-12 left is stock piled. I can buy it here for about $22 for a 12 ounce can or like $580 for a 30 pound can, of course that is with a certification. That stuff is liquid gold! You are better off converting over to a different freon. That other type that vader is talking about sounds great, if I have a problem with the AC I know that I am going to check into that.

I'm leary about R-12 substitues. Many of them are not approved for use because of high propane content. Also, for many of the replacements, each one MUST use unique service fittings and must be clearly labeled of the contents. This is because the system must be serviced by dedicated equipment. For example, if you have your system retrofitted to, somebody mentioned FREEZE 12, well first of all, you are NOT suposed to mix it w/ R-12, it should be retrofitted completely w/ FREEZE 12, not mixed.

FREEZE 12 vehicles need to have there service ports changed so that R-12 and R-134a machines cannot be hooked up to it. As set by EPA and SAE standards, FREEZE 12 service fittings must be: High side-Left hand thread, 7/16" wide, and 13 TPI; Low side- Right hand thread, 1/2" wide, and 18 TPI. FREEZE 12 is comprised of 80% R-134a and 20% HCFC 142b. Because of this, it SHOULD not be mixed w/ R-12. Therefore, if you just add it to your system, you risk system damage, and is also against the law. To do it properly, means complete retrofit. After that, any repairs MUST be done by a shop that has dedicated FREEZE 12 equipment. These can be few and far between, making it VERY hard to get serviced.

You can still purchase R-12, but be careful, because alot of "dirty" R-12 gets imported from Mexico. I have had much sucess w/ R-134 and I reccomend using that.

Its pretty expensive here, its taxed to death.

A more correct thing to say is its no longer made or available new in the US, the only stuff still being sold is stockpiled supplies. You can still get it new elsewhere, they do still make it.

I think its funny how DuPonts patent ran out and subsequently it was phased out by the EPA at the same time. I guess DuPont didnt want any competition.

You're supposed to have a license to buy it but I'm not sure how strongly the cashier enforces that.
