Unfamiliar component wants a engine drive belt

I got an '84 305, facing the car from the front and looking down the front of the engine theres something that wants a drive belt on the bottom left of the engine.
What is it? And has the car been trashed by it not being hooked up??

I just noticed it the other day and went to get a belt for it but I didnt know what it was called. The guy at the auto store tried selling me one of every belt in the car and told me to try till one fits. I dont have the money or the time to mess with that crap.

So any ideas?? (car has AC btw)

It's called an air pump it's job is to pump air into the exaust(sp?) system and reduce emissions. I'm not sure but you mite be hurting the cat by not having it hooked up.

Sounds like the smog pump. The belt was probably taken off for a reason, I bet its noisy as ever. No ill effects done w/ it unhooked, unless your a tree hugger.
