Timing light settings with new cam

I just thought of this today and instead of breaking out the old timing light and trying it out I figured I would ask and see if any experianced peeps would know.

After you install the cam the directions say to set the engine at 5* BTDC before you drop in the dizzy, which I did. When I shot the motor with a timing light I just set the timing light at 0* and timed the motor to 14* per the cam instructions. Now that I think of it, should I have set the timing light to 5* and then set the engine to 14*? Or did I do it right?

I'm not sure I quite understand what that means. Does that mean you adjusted the initial timing to 14 degrees after you got the engine running?

If so, there's nothing else to worry about (assuming you had the vacuum advance disconnected when you set the timing). The "5 degree BTDC" thing is just to get the distributor close when you drop it back in so it will start when you first crank it. It doesn't have any other significance.
