Understanding mods and Emissions

I gotta have emmisions where I live and I wanna understand what they allow and dont etc.

How much can I do to a car engine wise before I get into trouble getting the emissions test done? And what happens when Ive gotten to that point?

I was working on my car and was getting completely fed up with the emissions crap so I was about to rip it all out but i wanna know how much **** I get myself into for that..

Any info be great guys.

well, emissions can get you in big trouble. if you ditch all the emissions stuff, beprepared to not be able to renew your license plates and registration(at least in NC). I don't think the stuff is that bad, it may lose a few horses, but those can be made up elsewhere, within the law.

I know my engine is running probably not within passing emissions, so I'm going to put in dual high flow cats, to help clean the exhaust better, and still have a free flowing exhaust.

I live in VA too in Fairfax, where the emissions laws are the worst. I'm totally confused as to whats legal, and how to pass. I've heard that emissions inspection stations have models of what a certain type of car should output, and if your car outputs something outside of the range (regardless of engine just model), they fail you. Then again I haev also heard that if you drop another engine in, that emissions are checked based on the engine, not the model, so my mind is completely blown. Any clarification on this issue would be good, preferably from someone in Fairfax county.

The best thing for you to do is go to an emissions test station and ask them.

Anyone know of a website with this kinda info up on it?

Im not bothered that much that the emmisions rob me of a few hp, its just that its soo much more hoses and bits and pieces all over under the hood. Hard to make it all look good lol.
Now my 72 vette, under the hood looks like how under the hood should be. All business and no crap
