car overheated bad, future problems?
car overheated bad, future problems?
just bought a 92 RS with the 305 tbi in it. first drive i took with it was to the gas station. i always leave my cars running at gas stations while im filling up, so i went in, paid, then took off again just to see my temp gauge was pegged because the fan didnt come on. so i parked it in a nearby parking lot, opened the hood, and it was boiling into the resivoir. i dont know how hot it got, just that it stayed boiling for about 5-10 min. so what i need to know is what major problems might come from this, and what should i look for? dont worry about the fan i am getting that fixed.

I am not really far from you. I am in Glenwood so if need be I can show you or you can call/email me. I say this because when I first bought my LG4 305 carb I had the same problem. Several things need to take place for your car to run right, especially in the heat/COLD we have had around here.
1. Radiator can not leak. I put in a new one the first week I had my car. Don't go rebuilt, get a NEW one.
1a. Fresh anti-freeze all the time.
2. Fan relay must be working for fan to come on. Mine is located on driver side firewall but I have a '86 so it may be different on yours.
3. Need that plastic fan shroud. It controls air flow to the radiator.
4. Thermostat should be replaced. This way you know what you have. I have a 160 degree t-stat which is good for city driving/stop & go. If you do aa lot of highway then you want the higher rated t-stat.
5. If yiu have the idiot lites get a aftermarket guage. You need to see the temp of your engine at all times. By the time the idiot lite comes on it's too late. I had one put in for about $100.00. Chevy ran it direct to my block thru my A pillar pod. Looks sweet along with a tach and oil pressure. And I still have the idiot lites to boot. With you having a '91 RS I bet you have the guagues. Once you know what degree t-stat you have in your car then you can tell what temp your engine is. All you have to do is let your engine idle and the fan will kick in when the temp reaches the same temp as the type of t-stat you have in your car.
6. Be prepared to replace your water pump also. If this is not pumping properly you can seriously damage your heads or block. Check for leaks.
Now I am no mecanic but I had to go thru all of the above steps to solve what sounds like the same problem you have.
REMEMBER THESE F-BODY WILL OVERHEAT VERY EASILY IF ALL OF THE ABOVE IS NOT IN PROPER WORKING ORDER!!!
HOPE THIS STUFF HELPS! eMAIL ME IF YOU NEED MORE HELP.

Overheating can cause a blown head gasket.

the thermostat has nothing to do with when the fan comes on. there is a fan switch on the side of the heads(right head). stock temperature is 220 degrees. the thermostat only regulates the flow of coolant.

A very strange problem that can happen and yes it happened to me is that the overheating actually weakens the hold the head has on the rocker stud and since they are pressed in they just start pulling out. Suddenly your adjusting valves a lot and you wonder why until you find out the hard way. If you start getting any valvetrain noise beware! An easy and cheap fix is to drill the base through the stud and head and install a roll pin to hold the stud in place.
