hi guys. First off the noise sounds like detonation..but it's not. I've checked my timing 1000 times. It started after the race track. i crossed the traps at 6000. it's a 454 with a stock harmonic balancer. I guess my question is, can a wobbling balancer cause a rattle? i just noticed it today. it's wobbling and the rubber inertia ring is all bulged out on the timing cover side. it only makes this noise once the car hits 190 or warmer. Nothing hwen cold....it's driving me mad...please help!

i took it out tonight and yeah does it while accelerating. The severity gets worse as the motor heats up more....someone must know something!?

I would definatly change the harmonic balencer no matter what causes the rattle. You say it wobbles, but since it's a 454 (externally balanced) you arn't talking about the inner cutaway that might make it look like wooblin' are ya? If it's really doing a dance the last thing I'd want to do it look at it. See If you could move it with a small prybar. If that thing comes off the elastomer and shatters, It'll either put a hole in the hood or a crater in the asphalt, or punch out a side scoop in your fender (best case senerios).

Even if I suspected the balancer, I'd change it. They range from $50 to $250 for the SBC, big block I have no clue.

Make sure to use or rent the puller/installer for it as not to damage the main thrust bearing.
