Anyone have the formula for estimating HP based on mph?
What the topic says. I can't find it in my large stacks of magazines.

this site has some really bogus formulas. especially the HP required to maintain a ceratin speed. it never takes into account the drag coeffiecient for example. I believe i read someplace that a 91-92 trans am has a drag coefficient of about .35, which is good. Now, if you tell me that a thirdgen weighing 3500 lbs and a stripped fullsize truck that you got to weigh 3500 lbs needs the same HP to maintain the same speed, you need to go back through high school physics. The site has some good simple formulas, but anything more complicated doesnt take into account enough variables and i wouldn't put too much faith in.

That's kind of true. You may only need 550 HP but the car won't physically get that fast. When the SST did it they used 2 jet engines producing oodles of HP to get up to speed quickly.
I never played with those formulas on the web site but I wonder how long it would take you to break the sound barrier with 550hp. 200 miles?

That will get them up to speed quickly but once at speed, very little hp is required to keep the car moving. 550hp may be all thats required to drive at the sound barrier but much more is required to get you there.
