mild cam?

What would the purpose of using a mild cam be? Is it in any way beneficial?

to pass emissions, to give good fuel economy or drivability.

Thanks a lot. Another question. I have a 383 with TBI. When I change from TBI to a 750cfm carbed setup, is a mild cam going to lessen the performance improvement to a gross level?

My setup now:
88 IROC w/t-tops
383
9.5:1 flat top pistons
Dart Sportsman iron heads
cam - 260* adv. duration, 209* @ .0050, 414 lift, 110* lobe angle sep.
1 5/8" Hooker comp headers w/true duals
TH350 trans. and 2.73 rear
305 TBI (350 injectors) induction

I am going to sell my 92 RS for around $4,500 ASAP. My tentative general plans are:

750cfm Edelbrock carb
Performer intake
MSD billet distibutor
Fuel pressure regulator
3.42 Richmond or Auburn rear
Orange paint

Any suggestions on how $4,500 can be invested to optimize my base setup?

I don't guess i understand. The motor in the 88 is a 383 with a TBI and your going to change it to a carb? If that is the case and the cam has the specs you provided, yes, you will be limiting the hp potential with the .414 lift. I would at least get 1.6 rockers. Otherwise, I would change to a comp XE268 cam if you plan on pulling the motor.

Well, there is still a lot I an ignorant of where different specs of engine components are concerned. I need a good place to actually build a motor myself to really understand everything. I never thought I would know what I do now. I have played around with the idea of getting a crate motor with an excellent reputation for good, dependable performace. I have a Jeg's catalog and have had my eye on the Fast Burn 385.
