Engine Component Coatings: was Lotions and Potions on Pistons

I have my rotating assembly sitting waiting fo rme to get the measurement tools to assemble it.

In the mean time I was thingking about coatings for it. What is possible, and what drawbacks are there?

I read somewhere that you can do this yourself but I don't remember where I read it.

How does it affect clearance and quench?

Thanks,
Jason

There are tons of type of coatings. Ceramic, thermal barrier, friction reduction, cryogenic.... The bad thing though is they are rather expensive, about as much as a set of forged pistons.

To get the rods off you have to have the right kind off press setup or you will screw them up, making them usless. Its always best to take them to a machine or engine shop to have them use the proper tool to do it.

The typical price I've seen is $240 for the sides and the top. What am I missing by choosing not to do this?

If I did it would it change the balance? I didn't know that I should have the coatings put on first.
