Help me ID this sound !
I was hoping someone with some experience could help me find the source of this sound (not a lot of experience, just more then me
)
Anyway, I have a video clip, but it's kinda useless, it sounds like the belt(s)....Water pump? not sure...
noise
Should I:
- try tightening the alternator belt (since it was removed recently)
- loosening the alt belt
- use a stethoscope on my accessories (without have my face removed by the fan
-etc?
Thanks -J

Most likely a loose belt. (altough it could be a worn pulley bearing, or failing accesory too.) Does it only make that sound at idle?
Instead of a stethoscope, use a paper towel tube (or rolled up paper board) hold it over your ear and point the open end at each pulley. The one that is squealing will be very obvious.

damn, wasted money on a steth...
ok, thanks. I've just put the alt pulley back on, so that'll be my first one to check... what's the spec, something like "you can only push it with one finger 1/2" or so on the longest stretch of belt..."
I don't have a way of measuring the exact tension...
No, it's across the RPM band... I thought it might be the waterpump or something... perhaps the power steering pulley out of alignment? The pump seems to be a tiny bit further forward, like there is an extra 1 or 2 washers behind the bracket for it... i'm sure of it, it sure looks like it is... could just be my imagination...
ah yes, I did take a picture of it before...
power steering pump alignment?
not sure if you can see the "shiny" washer on the right side of the pump, seems out of place... maybe its just an optical illusion...
Thanks -J

Take those washers out and see if the power steering pump lines up better. As for the sound, it's kinda hard to hear, could be a squeeky belt but who knows.
