Dumb question about LB9
Dumb question about LB9
Here is a dumb question.
I bought my car when i was 17 and I was told it had a new crate 350 engine in it. I am now 21 and know much more about cars then when i was 17. I have an 86 iroc-z and i suspect that it still has the stock 305 engine in it and not the 350 that is suppose to be in it.
Here is my question was the lb9 engine an tpi? also does anyone have any idea how to verify if i have a 350 or a 305?
Thanks
Ryan

The LB9 is a 5.0L TPI,
I have heard that a 305 and a 350 look exactly the same on the outside, and that it is the bore and crank that distinguish the two.
Also, a 350 crate motor should have a lot more HP then the stock LB9 which is rated at around 215HP.

You could check the casting numbers...I'm not too sure on their location. The only other option would be to pull the heads and measure the bore. Maybe someone else can inform us of the casting numbers' exact locations, or you could search the archives...I'm sure that you could find 'em in there.

On my LB9 it says "5.0" on the drivers side back of the block behind the intake manifold.
You could also check the casting numbers on your heads, since a crate engine will probably(hopefully) have different heads. That would be much easier, just take the valve covers off.

I think 350 heads are different too. The exhaust ports for 3+5 and 4+6 are right next to each other on a 350 and seperate for a 305. Dont know if this is universal though.

my 85 LB9 actually was stamped 305 on the bottom side of the engine. Look under it, and see what numbers you can find.

the block casting numbers are on the right side of teh engine block(passenger side) and are directly below the cylinder heads....its gonna be hella hard to see that 5.0 next to the distributer.....if nothing leads you to an answer then put it on the @$$ dyno

305 heads used the same exhaust pattern. i can't even believe that was put on here. it's nice to try and help, but stuff like that just confuses them more. just look on the back driver side of the block and see if it show's 5.0L or 5.7L. assuming it's a new enough block in there it should show size.
