2.5 Iron Duke Trouble Shooting
I have a car with this engine. It has the TBI engine and an automatic transmission.
Recently I have noticed several problems:
1) Check engine light comes on periodically;
2) Excessive fuel consumption;
3) Stumbles or surges on acceleration (bogs down);
4) Idles fine in park and operates fine in light acceleration situations;
5) High mileage car (171,000 miles);
6) It has never over heated;
7) It does use oil.
It has a new air cleaner. Replaced the plugs, wires and DIS coil packs several years ago. It does not see many miles per year anymore, but my kids do drive it around.
I cannot check engine codes. Check engine light has been coming on more recently as late, and now the light comes on to coincide with the engine stumbling episodes.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

acually you can check the engine codes. you need to buy a haynes repair manual and it has the codes and how to read them with a simple peice of wire.

Okay. I have checked the "Service Engine Soon" light by jumpering the "A" & "B" terminals of the ALCL connector. This is on the 2.5 liter engine, and the codes all point to a bad O2 Sensor. My opinion is it needs to be changed out with a new unit.
Has anyone done this before? This motor has 171,500 miles on it, and the sensor is in the exhaust manifold. I know what the book says. I want real world, hands on advice.
Anyone got anything to say about this?
Codes: 12, 13, 44, & 45.

By Golly, I Think I Will Just Do It!
Just ordered the AC Delco O2 Sensor (AFS 20) on eBay. $20.00 + $4.50 S/H (PRIORITY USPS).
I think it may take longer than a minute or two to accomplish, but we will give it our best effort!

ive got this same motor. Im pretty sure its easy to access. Ive changed several 02 sensors over the years and the toughest part is getting them off. They usually are rusted solid. Just get some penetrating oil and a line wrench. Be sure not to round off the corners of the unit, then it's really hard to get out.
Ive noticed mine has some similar troubles as you have mentioned. I may look into the check engine codes too.

All Done.....
.............and the job was a piece of cake. A little WD-40 and my 7/8" wrench and the job couldn't have taken more then 15 minutes! I did it this past Sunday before the race.
The car runs one heck of a lot better now!!
Thanks,
Steve

Awsome! It makes you feel good knowing you handled the project all by yourself. I've always tried to tackle a mechanical project on my car myself than pay someone else to do it.
example; good friend of mine had piece of junk dodge intrepid with the ill fated 2.7L. Go figure the motor died and had to be replaced. Rather than let her pay some shop to replace it, I saved her thousands of dollars and swapped the motor myself. I had all the tools to do the job and I spent a few week nights and swapped in a new motor. It was only the second motor swap I've ever done. (first was my bro's camaro V6 to V8 swap).

It wasn't a real hard swap. Just time consuming. It was real easy to remove the motor....seemed like dodge knew you'd have to replace it.
those motors are pieces of junk. When the dodge dealership in town admits to that motor being the worst ever made....don't buy it!
