Ign Key Turns Freely

this happen last nite , i went to start the car heard someting click and snap then , the started to move freely in all postions

so to get home i just pulled the rod to start it to get home ,

any ideas on what i should replace , friend of mine said it happen to him he jus went to the junk yard and bought a sterring coumlum ?

can any shine some light on this thanks

What has happened, more than likely, it the rack, or pinion gear, or both, in the left side of the column, have broken. You can replace these parts, but tearing down the steering column is required. Need a steering wheel puller, and a lock ring compressor. You can rent these tools from many locations if you do not have them. Not a difficult job, just time consuming. Replacing the entire steering column would be over kill.
