Knocking

She has this knocking sound which is
intermitent I thought It could be the torque converter
or maybe the flexplate.
When I am driving she sometimes makes this
knocking sound the vibrations do feel like there
right under the shifter. The sounds last night where loud,
but it cames and went away.
I got under the car and started it up seems to be
coming from the bottom end.

Question
Does what does a spun main bearing sound like?

I would pull the torque converter cover, and look at the flexplate while its running in park. Maybe the starter gear is contacting the flexplate, and that could mean a worn thrust bearing, or bent flexplate. If it checks out ok, check that all the bolts down there are tight.

knocking

I can eyeball it since theres no cover.
I dont see the flexplate hitting ,there seems to be
a smidge of lateral movement.

The bolts to the converter are tight.

If I had the facilities I would remove the tranny from
the engine and start the car.
There was some play in the tailshaft when I put in a drive
gear 2 weeks ago.

I suppose taking the tranny out with the converter
would help me find out something.
I do want to put in a 5 speed anyway.

thankyou

If there was play in the tailshaft, the bearing in there could be bad.

tailshaft

If there is play in the tailshaft
the front bushing could be bad
but the tranny fluid is good
The tranny shop said if the front bushing goes
have to rebuild it no way to get to it
without opening it up..
