this problem is really getting on my nerves now.. my flexplate is hitting on the starter drive at the end toward the nose .. there is a thrust washer/bushing at the end of the shaft and the flexplate is just barely hitting it ??? any ideas everything looks fine shims wont help flexplate is on right and everything is tight

Did you recently change the starter? Seems like your flexplate would be damaged if it hits while running. Or does it only make a racket while starting?
The pins on the arm that extends the drive gear in the starter can wear, causing the gear to extend less and less.
