cooling fan

My car is a 84 T/A 305 automatic.When i started my car every day i always herd the fan come on for a few seconds and then go off and i would go about my way.lately i havent herd the fan and my temp would almost go into the red and the go back below 220 and back and forth.how would i correct this?

TA,

First, make sure the dash instrument is corect. If the gauge is not at least close to correct, you may not really have a problem at all.

Next, make sure the cooling systemn is full and has no entrapped air. Also check for hot flow in the upper hose and right radiator tank.

Then test the fan relay (I'm presuming you have an electric fan) by grounding the control wire from the temperature sensor. If the fan doesn't operate, the relay and power connections are suspect.

If the fan operates, replace the temperature sensor. They are about ten bucks, and unless you have an accurate thermometer, some boiling water, and an ohmmeter, it can be difficult to test the sensor.

You may find that the sensor has a lot of deposits on the sensing element tip, which means that since the system is already draining, it would be a very good time to flush the cooling system.
