other synthetics?
other synthetics?
The only Synthetic I hear about it Moble 1. What about the Castrol, Pennzoil etc synthetics. And what about the Wal-Mart Synthetic? What is that all about?

and mobile 1 seems to be the best of the lower end synthetic. From what ive been hearing " top secret
" is that the wallmart brand supertech is mobile oil just packaged diffrently. So by this assumption exxon sure flow which is also the same company as mobile is the same oil. So 3 brands of oil are the same exxon sure flow, supertech and mobile. I dont know if this is true but thats the word on the street.

Whats up with amsoil? I never see there products on anyones shelf yet they seem to have a rich history in the lubricants business. Im sure that Valvoline synthetic isn't that good compared to Mobil becuase on every one of their products they put the "beats all other products in its class" label except their fully synthetic line.
Amsoil is a very good synthetic engine lubricant. Mobil 1 is also a very good lubricant. Each has some minor advantages over the other in a few categories. Amsoil 10W30 has a slightly lower pour point than Mobil 1. That's very important if you drive around at -60°F. Mobil has a better (tighter) viscosity index (more stable at higher temps). Amsoil has a slightly higher flash point, but creates a little ash when exposed to combustion. Mobil 1 has a flash point slightly lower than Amsoil, but creates zero ash when burned. Neither oil contains zinc as an EP additive, since the molecules are so stable at such high temperatures and loads.
Mobil 15W50 has a better pour point than Amsoil 15W40, but the Amsoil still has a slightly higher flash point and slightly tighter viscosity index.
Valvoline synthetics have a much higher ash content and pour points, and Castrol Syntec is probably the least desireable synthetic, since it performs about the same as a well-engineered mineral oil. The specs on Syntec are really no better than Pennzoil Performax 5W30 mineral oil.
None of the synthetics of any brand are much better in an SAE viscosity less than 10W. In other words, the 10W30 synthetics have pour points around -70°F, while the 5W oils only pour down to -76°F - a marginal 6° better. Are you really going to even start your engine at those temperatures? Not me. On the other end of the scale, once that engine is warmed, the 5W oils are losing viscosity faster (higher indicies).
Just in case you were wondering....

Vader,
that was by far the best and most information filled response to any of the "which synthetic?" posts ever. And it wasn't 3 pages long!
Anthony
p.s good job on remaining neutral as far as brand loyalty
