Tires
Tires
I have a set of Dunlop Sport 4000 Z-Rated tires.
The tires say the maximum tire pressure is 44 PSI.
A friend of mine told me that I should inflate the tires until they're within 2 PSI of their maximum pressure...or is it better for the tires in the long run (the goal is maximum tire life) to inflate them to as close to 44 PSI as possible, without going over?

A good tire pressure is around 28-29 PSI in the rear and about 31-32 PSI in the front. This works for me anyway...it will probably vary slightly from tire to tire.
Inflate them to whatever the sticker inside the driver's side door says. Unless it's a F#$d Explorer....then 32psi should do.

try this:
Get some white chalk.
draw a line across the tire with the chalk from sidewall to sidewall.
Back up or drive forward one tire revolution.
Look at the chalk line.
If it is worn in the center, lower the airpressure.
If it is worn on the outside, increase the air pressure.
You want even fading of the chalk.
Might take more than one revolution depending on the chalk and the surface.
Almost forgot, make sure tires are warm before doing this, since you really do not care about cold tire pressure. And you are on a smooth surface.
