Air

Where in the car does the car gather air so that it can be used in the combustion process?

I've done reading on how the internal combustion engine in general works, but there's never been any clear indication as to where the air supply for combustion comes from.

Pictures would be a major plus, since I match up what people display with my motor.

Thanks.

J

Do you mean where is a good location to put an intake for the engine? If you're looking for a high pressure area while the car is moving, right at the base of the windshield is one of the easier ones to draw air from. (cowl induction hoods draw from this low-speed / high pressure air) The other spot is as far to the front of the car as you can put a scoop, like the ram-air style that new 'birds use. (high-speed / low pressure air there) Or are you talking aobut where does a stock one draw in air? That would depend on the year / engine type...

Right through the ductwork into the throttle body then plenum then runners then intake base then cylinder head intake ports then combustion chamber...It comes from everywhere around you... If you're breathing, it must be there... I'm having trouble understanding what you mean by "where does it come from".

look on your TPI plenium, and follow it to the front of the car. there is a black air box. this is where the air comes from(at least on tpi camaros)

The TPI plenum, what is that? Is that the metal plate at the top of the engine that says "Tuned Port Injection"?

I think on Firebirds the intake is different. The plate that says "Tuned Port Injection" is mounted on the top of the throttle body. forward of that you'll see a large rubber tube that bends to the right side of the car and then leads down into a large round canister. Inside that canister is the air filter and on the end of it will be the opening that air is drawn in from.
