header good ground for neg battery cable?

Yes its a good ground as far as connections go...
But its a bad spot to ground the cable because of heat. You will cook all the insulation off the cable and it will look like crap.
As the cable discolors and deterorates, so does the actual conection due to corrosion.
I always use the heads.

A header flange bolt/stud might be O.K., but the header tubes themselves might not pass the necessary current for a hot start, not to mention the heating of the copper wire.
