How do you know how much you adjusted the timing without a light?

Yes adding timing will always make the engine more stable provided that it will crank.

Nothing funny about this. This is what should be happening.

In absense of a light I would contine to advance in small increments until the engine starts to ping. and then back off.

You CAN NOT trust the balance as it may have slipped and can give false readings in relation to the pointer.

Did advancing the timing get rid of Santa?

Timed window break? How's that work?


My friends and I also have the car leap. Put a suspension spring between a hood and an engine and use as a springboard. I have hurt myself pretty bad with that one... Almost put my head through the rear window of a cav...

Im not sure, I still burn 1/4 of a tank every 2 days.... But maybe santa has left?? I will check when i start it this morning

ON a side note, Im gonna mist more water down the carb. I put 40 bucks in on monday (full to the top) now i have a quarter of a tank left......I hate this stupid *** engine!!

This thread is getting brutally long. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.
Did you get it fixed?
Do you have a timing light?
Do you have a vacuum gauge?
Do you have the tool to adjust your mixture screws? Have you adjusted them?


I have all those, drop by some evening and we can take a look at it if you want...

How are you calculating mileage, US gallon, or Imperial?
If I got that kinda mileage i'd be dancing in the streets though... However, for that mileage I get.... umm, oh right, TORQUE.

timing light = no
vac gauge = no
adjuster tool = no, but I did it with pliers

Where abouts do you live? Cause you probably know what your doing, me, im just trying different things.....not good.

And I had calculated my milage with how many kms i put on and how much fuel i burn, and since there are more americans on here, i put it into mpg.

I'm a stones throw from dalhousie station. I'm not exactly an expert, but my car is running, and I have the tools, and usually two heads are better then one. PM me for address or phone #.

Well yea in Canada I've never met anyone that told me how many kms/litre they've used, at least not without a big rainbow flag above their head.... My family goes with gallon = 4.55L, the imperial gallon, compared to the 3.79L as the american gallon... That still confuses me... I get my mileage in imperial, and it's not comparable to an americans.... So usually I check first....

Anyway, tommorow i'm going to be helping my brother with his ABS sensors on his car, and building a work bench, but i'll have some spare time.... Go to dalhousie station, go south/west on 53rd ave, it t-bones at Varsity Drive (I think...), take a right at the 3 way stop, next right into the cul-d-sac. You'll see my beat up black-ish T/A and a nice green Crown Vic up on jackstands...

when i step on the gas i hear a back fire through the carb then a pause then it picks up, wtf is that

back firing into the carb usually means it's too lean...
usually the mixture is ignited before the intake valve is closed, so if it's too lean the flame propagation (rate the fire spreads in the combustion chamber) will be much higher and backfire into the carb before the valve is closed.

combined with the pause before picking up it sounds like the accelerator pump in your carb isn't working - it should fire an extra shot of fuel into the carb when you step on the gas to prevent the mixture from going too lean, if it isn't working you will notice backfiring and lag in power.
