timing trouble

I just put my motor back in and I have the car running(without the MAF plugged in, it wont run with it in). But it idles kind of bad, I still need to adjust some rockers and I can't get the timing right. I can't see the line on the balancer at all, no matter how far I set the dial on my timing light. I know the groove is there. If I spin the distributor enough and let the idle fall low I sometimes hear a knocking sound, I have the distributor wire disconnected when Im trying to set the timing, but I can't see what its at so this isn't helping much.

I had the distributor 180 degrees off, but I pulled it out and set it right..but I still can't set the timing accurately except by ear. I don't know why I can't see the mark, whats wrong?

Also, why won't my car run with the MAF plugged in? The MAF and relays are new. I get a code 34 with the MAF plugged in, 33 with it unplugged. Would a vacuum leak cause a code 34 and a no-run situation WITH the MAF plugged in? I installed a superram and I've heard they are prone to leaking. Anyone have experience with this?

That's weird, the car shouldn't run at all without a MAF signal. As far as your not being able to see the timing marker, your dist. could still be off a tooth so your timing is way out in left field. So when you adjust it so that it runs ok you're off 45*-90* on the #1 wire which is why you can't adjust that far. Try it on the #8 or #2 wire(18453672?) and it might show up. If that don't work pull it and try again.

You may be a tooth off OR when you adjusted the valves, did adjust the on 1tdc and 6tdc. People some times adjust the valves on 1TDC and 4TDC (that's for a 6 cyl), cause major timing and idling problems because some the the valve are held open. Just a thought.
