wires, wires, everywhere but what do they do?
First let me say that my 92 bird would crank and wouldn't start.
I got some advice through other threads on the board and it still
didn't start. Yesterday I went around and checked for loose
connections and such and I opened up a few of the wire looms
to see what's/doin'. My findings were very interesting:
1. On the driver's side there is what appears to be 2 relays. One
is the fuel pump relay. What is the other?
Also, should the green with white wires be spliced together?
There is also a thin orange wire spliced with a thick red wire?
2. On the passenger side near the a/c condenser, there are
orange and red wires with connectors NOT connected to
anything. What do these wires go to????
3. And more than likely the most important, there is a wire loom
next to the coolant recovery tank that I opened up and there
is a thick black wire with a red stripe that seems to be cut in
half. There is at least a 3" gap between the two. Before I go
messing with anything, what do these wires do AND do should
they get connected together?
4. In this same wire loom, there is a thick black wire that has
been cut and has about the same gap between the cut. What
does this wire do AND should they get connected together?
I guessing this is a ground wire as there is another wire
connected to one part of it and it is connected to a fender
bolt.
Needless to say, I would like to find the individual whom had this
car before I bought it a give them a serious beat down for this.
Anyhow, I hope finding out what these wires are and do are the
reason that my car will crank and won't start so I can move on
with some other aspects of the vehicle.
I forgot to mention that the car is a 305 with tbi.
Thanks

sounds like your fan wires are cut....my 86 IROC had the same thing happen to it...the previous owner was a real smart cookie. what i did was i took the tan wire and spliced it to the black wire with a red stripe on it....now my fan comes on when the ignition is on....as for the non starting issue check your intake for a strong smell of gas...if you find the smell your not getting spark. if you dont its most likely a fuel system failure....Most likely culprit is the fuel pump, injectors, filter, and pressure regulator.

Upon further inspection, the plain black wire(from the firewall side),
is connected to a hack job red wire that is connected to the
passenger fender.
The other end of the plain black wire(from the radiator side), is
connected to nothing.
So I am guessing that the plain black wires go together but
should there be a wire spliced onto it going to a ground source??
I am ready to try to start this thing again and don't want to fry
something or have any thing else bad happen. I have replaced
enough things on this car already and I don't want to have to
go and replace things that I have already replaced.
Help!!!!

Pour a little bit of fuel in the car, then try to start it. If that helps then you have a fuel delivery problem.
Put a timing light on a spark plug, if the light shoots when you try cranking it then you have spark (but that doesnt guarantee quality of spark).
Did the motor run prior to something you did? Perhaps a mod? Have you ever touched the timing? If not, leave it alone for now.
As long as there's wiring to the ignition (steering column), starter, battery, and proper grounds then it's not likely an electrical problem. And a cut up fan switch wire would not stop the car from starting.

The car did start for a "little" while then it wouldn't start at all.
I am not worried about the fan switch as much as I am trying
figure out if the thick black wire is supposed to have an
auxiliary wire connected to it going to a ground source.
The car ONLY starts now by putting some carb cleaner in the
TB. There is fuel in the car and I have put fuel stabilizer in the
car when it was starting to have this problem.
I have never touched the timing so your advice on that is WELL
taken.
Next step is to get a timing light and a fuel pressure gauge to
do some more diagnostics.
