Distributerless Ignition?

Is it possible to switch to a distributerless ignition system from the current HEI we have in our 3rd gen and who makes the product?

Check out Summit or Jeg's for a crank trigger set-up. It's really not worth the high price unless you're into serious racing.

88 IROC with cobbled together (not by me)drivetrain, 86 (?) TPI unit,CE subframe connectors, Edelbrock strut tower brace, polygraphite bushings all around...it handles like a dream, but man is it hard to push!!

there would be no real benifit to that, and you will run into more problems if you do the swap. You'll also have to convert the oil pump to electronic, since it's drivin by the distributer.

you may want to look at the electromotive TEC II system. it is a crank trigger system, replaces the distributor.. no more burning proms. when yo uwant to modify the engine, you simply change the input variables in a program using a laptop, plug it into the TEC II, and upload the new file. with the TEC II, you can control so many variables its not funny. you can immitate an FMU when boost is detected(if you've S/Ced your engine), you can specify a certain amount of timing retard/advance at each rpm level(i think 16 different rpms to be exact), you have two rev limiters.(this is the awesome part).. say you set your lower rev limiter to 1500rpms.. that means you can line up to drag, hit the gas but the TEC II will pull all the timing out when it hits 1500 (this is what a turbo motor does), even though the engine is making basically no power because there is no timing advance, the turbo's spool up, so when you turn the rev limiter off, the turbos are already goin full blast, you get immediate timing advance, and you launch like you jsut dont know. also, the TEC II can control fuel pumps with extreme precision. for instance, instead of an electric pump running all the time(like a secondary pump for nitrous or S/Cer), it simply sends electric impulses to the pump to turn on and off as it is needed. the whole system sells for around 1600-1700. i think it is worth every penny. oh yea, its got 3.. or 4 coils, i cant remember. check it out if you are serious about converting.. www.electromotive.com i think there is one guy on this board running the setup, procharged89z? i think thats his name, he's got a D1 and frequents the power adder board, might want to talk to him if you have any specific questions

Most of the DIS systems put the cam sensor in the dist. hole and use this to drive the oil pump.
