Timing Question

Has anyone run with their timing less than 6*? I'm sure I remember a while back I had checked my timing and found it to be at 3*. It ran strong but I have since bumped it up to 6*.
It just doesn't seem to pull hard up top any more and wonder if for some strange reason my car wants even less timing than 6*.
I will be testing at the track in a couple of weeks but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience.

Its not in the same realm of advance, and I would ignore the numbers but I was told to set my initial on this particular car at 16-18 advanced. I was told by some others to 'advance till ping, back off 2'... yea heard that before. Anyway, by the time I hit 22 advanced and still no ping, I decided screw it, tune to speed. It runs best at 12-14, depending on the weather and the gas. So much for the 'experts'.

Each application will vary on what it wants and needs, depending on the heads, cam, and even if your balancer is marked right and hasnt slipped. I say if it runs best at 3, leave it there.

Is that initial advance? I don't know much about the electical dist. advance curves, but that's at ton. Like you said though if it ain't pinging it's OK.

The other day, I hooked my car up to a Snap On scanner. I have my timing set at 6* as per manunfacturers specs.

I watched the knock retard, and at WOT the knock sensor detected knock and took out 6*.

So you may not hear ping, but the computer does. From what I'm told, ideally you don't want any knock retard. Its also possible that something other than detonation is setting off the KM. I am looking into this today.

ATO, was that to me? Yea, its alot of initial, but its not a computer controlled distributor, light car, stick, medium cam, it works pretty good actually, getting around 38 total advance IIRC.

Every engine is different and usually has it's own optimum timing. If it runs better with less timing, go for it.

Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, current red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...
