Trying to seize an engine...would this work??

Ok, i'm going to the junkyard tomorrow to attempt (again) to get a flywheel. Last time i couldn't jam something to stop the motor from spinning and i had no leverage.
So i've been thinking....what if i filled a cylinder with dirt and put the spark plug back in??? Would this keep the motor from spinning??? Any other suggestions? It's friekin hard to do this on while lying on my back.

Pop out the spark plug

Shove screw driver down in the hole

Then take off fly wheel

come one, I got mine off buy just jamming a screwdriver between the teeth of the flywheel and then use a breaker bar and smack it as hard as you can, you have to use a surge of force to break it loose when you can't hold it too well. If all eles fails, got get an impact gun with imapct sockets.

Take this post seriously: snap on makes a
battery powered impact gun.. At first I thought it was a joke, but I know a few guys at the garage now that are using them in place of their air powered guns and they work
very, very well.

Take out a sparkplug and thread a couple feet of 1/4" rope into it, when you turn the engine it will lock up when it compresses the rope.

There are inexpensive (read Asian) flywheel turners, looks kinda like a spanner wrench that graps the flywheel.

Cost about 10 or 12 bucks at the discount AP stored.

I'll back up what Joe said. I have one and it rocks! Single best tool I've ever bought. It is rated at 80 Ft/lbs, but I can tell you is way stronger than that. It will pull lugnuts with no problem. It would surely pull fly wheel bolts.

Wouldent it just be easyer to grab the flywheel with a rag and use your othert hand to take the bolt out?

I don't know much about flywheels and it's been a long time since I've worked/seen one but......

Don't they have large holes in them??

If so, couldn't you just stick a pipe or piece of wood in one of the holes to jamb the flywheel?

Just a thought.

NO, a flywheel does not have holes in it. A flexplate for an auto does.

Put a breaker bar on the nut on the crank and brace it against something that will not move. Thats what I do.

Also make sure you are using 6 pt sockets or you will round off the heads.

When Snap-On sells sockets for like $40 each, i can only imagine how much that impact would cost. Would be nice to have though. I'm off to the boneyard now.....

Take a tie down and attach one end to the flexplate/flywheel other end to a fender or anywhere else

Yes!! My plan worked. Except i used some old screws and nuts that i found. I threw them in the hole and JACKPOT....locked-up motor.
$20 for the flywheel. Not bad....needs to be resurfaced though.
