NEED TROUBLE-SHOOTING HELP!!!!

[posting this for a friend with user name problems...]

Last night comming home while crusing on the highway at about 70mph my car just completely died out. Deader than a doornail on the freeway. I checked the key and the car sounded like it popped from a spark or backfire...when i coasted to a stop on the side of the road and tried to restart the car, it cranked and fired, but as fast as it fired, it died again. I tried about 3 or 4 times and got the same results. My guess by the backfire is that the car is getting spark but no fuel. I called a buddy and had him come to the car and listen to it on the side of the road. But when i went to start it, it fired right up after sitting for about 10 min, but after idling for a few secs, i reved it up and in the process of reving it up and down, it died again, tried to restart it and it wouldnt start this time. I call a tow and after about 15min, i decide to try and start it again. This time it fires right up and i let it idle for about 15sec. Then i throttle it up to about 1100 RPM and it runs just fine for a min or two, But as soon as I let the rpms drop to idle, it dies and wont start again. This all happened last night and after sitting all night i go out this morning to try and start it, and it cranks but wont start. Oh, one thing i forgot to mention is that when it did fire up the first time and ran for a few secs, there was a very bad smell of gas, i mean REALLY bad. But the second time it ran, didnt smell a thing. I have an Air/Fuel ratio guage and when i got it started, it ran very lean and one or two LEDs into the Stoich and then back to lean, but i didnt see what it was when it initially died. If this makes sense to anyone or you have had similar problems, please give me your input. Im thinking it might be fuel pump or fuel filter clogged, but when i looked at my dash when the key is in the "On" position and not running, my Service Engine Soon light is flashing when it usually stays on solid. Please give some feedback...the car is a 92 Z28 TPI 305 if this makes a difference.
