Cylinder head bolt sealer

Ok, it's Friday night and I'm working on my 89 Formula 350 as usual. Good thing the girlfriend is away on vacation right now..

Now for the serious stuff:

My instructions say use sealer on the appropriate head bolts and oil on the others, but I don't know which ones get the sealer. Doh!

The tightening order is:

13 5 2 10
17 9 1 6 14
16 12 8 4 3 7 11 15

(I hope the sequence shows up properly)

Anyone know where the sealer goes?

Sealer goes on ALL head bolts.

I use PST (loctite brand) sealer with teflon.

Tip: Use it on the intake manifold bolts also, oil won't creep up the threads and cause "mystery" oil puddles on the intake.

Another vote for PST. It is actually an adhesive sealant, not just a thread joint compound like Teflon paste pipe "dope" that you can find at almost any hardware store and home center. PST is available at soem better auto parts stores and most industrial suppliers. (HINT: you'll pay a lot less for a larger tube at an industrial supplier than at an auto parts house.)

I used High-temp RTV silicone, the orange stuff. I've used it on exhaust gaskets so its holds up very well to the high heat. Just smeer it on the threads.

2QUIK6 RTV is about the last thing you'd want to use on a head bolt, reguardless of how well it works for other applications. for head bolts you want a non hardening sealer such as liquid teflon, non hardening permatex, or rectoseal.

Its been my experience the the liquid teflon turns to dust in extreme heat conditions. The high-temp RTV does stay soft, its meant for extreme heat applications. I have several buds that have built motors for 23+ years ands thats what they told me use as they have used it on head bolts most of their careers. I couldn't find anything thread sealer wise at 2 of the local auto stores so I asked them and that was the response.
APR makes some thread sealer, but would have had to wait a week for ground delivery since they couldn't ship via air.
