fuel pump help
Today I tried to start up my car and it fired up but died soon after. My car is carbed so I pumped the gas and it started up again and it wanted to stall so I tried to give it some gas and nothing. I turned the key on again and nothing....it just kept cranking over. I tried it about 3 times and nothing so I stopped. I noticed that when I would turn the key in the "on" position sometimes I would hear the pump run but now I don't. Mind you this didn't always happen, sometimes I would hear it and sometimes it wouldn't make a sound and fire up just fine. I checked the fuel pressure and it was at zero when I tried to start it. I thought maybe it would be a fuse so checked all the fuses and they seemed to be fine. One thing strange though is that there was a couple of wires coming into the fuse block with terminals on them. They were sort of plugged into the fuse socket with the fuse. I know that my fuel pump relay has wires coming out of it that are connected with spade connectors and go into the firewall. When checking the fuses I pulled out the wires going into the block. One looked like some kind of plug that went to nothing so I just pulled it out...another one is just a wire and I have no idea what it goes to. Now I'm thinking maybe it was going to the fuel pump relay. Also by the fuel pump relay it looks like some wires and there is a connector with a fuse attached to it. It's not factory and it goes throught the firewall but I don't know what it hooks too. I know I wasn't getting any fuel before I pulled these wires from the fuse block but why would they be there? Are they getting power for something? Anyway, before I drop the tank and pull the pump is there anything I can check? I read there is a connector somewhere in the rear cargo area that plugs into the fuel pump. What do I check for...also is it possible my fuel pump relay went bad?
I saw a relay kit on Summit from Holley. Should I rewire my relay at all since it looks hacked anyway...it doesn't look like a factory connector is plugged into it. Also, if my pump is bad what kind should I get? Are inline ones any better than in tank pumps? I am planning on converting to fuel injection sometime in the future so I would like to get something to handle the fuel flow I will need. I'm almost positive that my pump is the stock one from a Crossfire car...at least according to the previous owner. I can post some pics of my relay and the strange wires.
