Carb. and transmission

I just bought a 750 vac. sec. Holley carb for my 84 Z-28 with a 355 in it and a 700R4 trans. I spent this afternoon getting the right things around to do the installation and reading the literature about the carb. I ran across a warning that said that this carb. is not designed to be used with a automatic overdrive trans and that it could do severe damage to the trans. I have never heard of this before and for the life of me can't figure how it could hurt anything. The motor is unpluged from the computer, the trans is still pluged into the computer so the overdrive still works just fine as well as the lockup. Does this make any sense to anyone out there and if so do you know why it would affect the trans. The only thing hooked to the trans. from the carb. is the TV cable and that works the same as on the Carter Comp. carb. that has been on the car. I would greatly appreciate some advice, I really want to try this carb. but also don't want to blow my trans. Thanks NORT

I don't see any danger in that as long as you find a way to lock up in 4th gear, and you use the proper bracket to have the correct TV cable pull geometry. It's not the same as the TH350 cable hookup, you need the dedicated 700R4 bracket to get the proper line pressures in the trans.

I believe the warning is regarding the TV cable and bracket setup. Since it wasn't originally setup to work with a 700r4 or other GM autos as far as I know you could mess some stuff up without the right setup.

My Holley had the same warning. I just got a tv cable/throttle cable bracket from them that is correct for the application and it works fine.

I can see no other possible way the induction could even impact the tranny at all...

I think Ray87 is on the money.I don't know about the Holley, but i was running a edelbrock performer(Carter afb)and could never get the tv cable adjusted right for my auto. trans. The geometry just isn't the same as what a OEM carb would be.It would shift alot higher than normal and if you kicked it down all the way to the floor, the tv acted like it was being pulled too far and the trans would actually slip out of gear untill you let off alittle bit.I think this contributed to my engine throwing a rod bearing earlier this year.(over-revving).I realize edelbrock sells brackets for throttle and tv linkage, but i don't know if moving the cable closer or further away from the carb will make any difference(i don't think it would).I put my Quadrajet back on after i put the new motor in my car,and everything works great.Whatever you decide,be careful.
