Spark...Throttle response ?

Hey Folks.

Back in my 20's (which was 15yrs ago), I had a guy do some engine work for me. We got to chatting about race cars and racing and he told me something similar to this.....

He said, there are some springs in the distributor. If you remove or weaken these springs... it would give you wide open throttle response from the ignition as quick as you can mash the pedal.

Was he full of BS??

I've seen a car around town here lately, and when he steps on the gas it's nothing but immediate response! No bog or that 1/2 second moment for the engine to open up all the way.

This is really tough to try and describe.

In other words....
When he mashes the gas pedal to the floor.... It all happens instantly and the tires are begging for mercy.

I know the MSD and other ignitions help in this factor simply because you need alot of spark to accomplish this task, but is that all there is to it?

If I were to buy a MSD 6AL or something similar would I get instant response like mentioned above???

Thanks in advance.
