Trouble Codes

I was wondering, is there a way to find out what is wrong (what trouble code....) with out using a diagnostics computer?

Try searching for "paper clip." There is a little search link near the "Reply to Topic" button.

most auto parts sell a gm code reader, its around 30.00 bucks,,you plug it into the test connector under your dash and read the book that comes with it,,,it will read the basic codes,,

I always try to read or search for answers before I post something, and almost every question I could possibly ask has been answered, otherwise I would have 1000+ posts.

Welcome to Thirdgen.org, Buck. You will find a lot of help from the people here, but if you don't mind reading a bit you could also find anything you need in old messages. Anyway, I'll paste the FAQ for you this time..

THE CONNECTOR

DISPLAYING THE TROUBLE CODES
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6), then turning the ignition to the on position without starting the engine will flash the "Service Engine Soon" light in the following sequence: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause Following this "12" code repeating three times will come any trouble codes stored, flashing each of them three times. If you do not see the "12" flash three times, your diagnostic circuit is defective.
Some vehicles will display stored trouble codes, then "12" again, followed by energizing "most system controlled relays." The fuel pump relay will not energize. The idle air control valve will fully extend to enable checking minimum idle speed.

Scroll to the very bottom of the main page to look up a code, the trouble codes are in red.

I'd rather spend a penny on a paper clip. That thing is such a rip.
