Green Foamy Slime in Differential OK ??
Green Foamy Slime in Differential OK ??
Had the car up on the lift for inspection earlier today, where they failed me for a tiny hole in the last inch of the exhaust pipe, right before the muffler.
Sooo, while it was up, I pried out the rubber stopper in the diff, and stuck in my little finger, and my finger came out with this foamy green stuff on it. Normal ? The result of some additive, maybe?
Water ?
Thanks

than normal. Unless it's some kind of posi lube I wouldn't think that was anywhere close to normal. Normal gear lube is not green. It should never be foamy either. Especially after sitting for a while the oil should calm down. This is by far the weirdest thing I have ever heard.
Terrific. Anyone else have any ideas ? Maybe the oil level is low and the gears are churning it into a foam ? But why a green foam ?

Some grease is somewhat greenish looking. And it always ends up with a certain amount of foam in it; it gets whipped around in there pretty violently, and then it takes quite a while for all the air to rise to the top.
Still, if you don't like how it looks, just change it. If you haven't ever done that, then it needs it anyway, no matter what color it is.

It sounds like there was some water leaking into the axle from the cover or the axle seals. That could produce the color that you described in your origional post if you have the axle torn down then you can take the axles out and replace the berrings.

Well, I called up my local Pontiac dealer and he said yes, for my lsd the green color is normal since the fluid itslef, or the additive, can't remember which, is green. He said the foam is normal too, and that I should let it settle down a while before I check the level. SO rlb, you were right.

I just changed my diff fluid last month, and neither the diff fluid or the LSD fluid was green. Both were GM fluids.
